PATRICK CALLAGHAN
Over 40 years of professional experience and success has made Patrick Callaghan one of this country's most trusted and recognized names in dog training. Mr. Callaghan has developed numerous AKC field trial champions, assisted dozens of clubs, businesses and government agencies, made appearances in many television programs, magazines and newspapers, and worked with a wide variety of important politicians, military figures, movie celebrities and sports personalities. Patrick has conducted dog training seminars across the western U.S. for many years for companies that include Gaines Cycle dog food products and Tri-Tronics Inc., manufacturer of remote training collars.
Mr. Callaghan established the Gameland Kennels Dog Training Center in Norco, California in 1979, at first specializing in training hunting dogs and then expanding to include family dog obedience and narcotic detection.
During this process Patrick recognized a need for effective rattlesnake avoidance training. Because rattlesnakes can be found almost anywhere and bites are common--which can be very painful, dangerous and expensive--Patrick Callaghan Enterprises was formed in 1982 to specifically train dogs as well as cats, horses and llamas to gain awareness and help to prevent serious injury or worse. Utilizing his years of experience, Mr. Callaghan has perfected a process of teaching a dog or other domestic animal to recognize the sound, smell and visual stimulus of a rattlesnake in a variety of settings, using a technique and environment that's safe and humane for the animal and the rattlesnake.
Mr. Callaghan's method of rattlesnake avoidance training has been so successful that its led to extensive travel to conduct Rattlesnake Avoidance Training Clinics for groups such as hunting clubs, veterinarians, Riverside County Search and Rescue, the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, the Hidden Valley Obedience Club, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Search Dog Team, Pro-Train, the Riverside and San Diego chapters of Quail Unlimited, the Southwestern Rottweiler Club, Mountains Restoration Trust, and Palo Alto Foothills Tracking Association. Also, the training has been featured on television's "Venom ER" series, seen on Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and/or The Learning Channel and also resulted in a "Best of Los Angeles 2004" award for Best Dog Safety Classes.
Patrick also provides private sessions for groups such as CARDA, Inglis Police Dog Academy, conducted at the J. Paul Getty Center and included dogs from the Department of Homeland Security - ICE/Federal Protective Service, police departments in Atascadero, Port Hueneme, Ventura, Santa Paula, Simi Valley and Gardena, and the Santa Barbara and Ventura Sheriff's Departments.
Mr. Callaghan's work has been seen in the Los Angeles Times, the Orange County Register, the Press Enterprise, the Daily Bulletin, the Denver Post, the San Diego Union, the Ojai Valley News, Western Outdoor News, Quail Unlimited Magazine, Weatherby Magazine, Petersen's Hunting Magazine, California Fish & Game Magazine, Hunting and Fishing News, and California Dog Magazine. Television appearances include the American Hunter on ESPN, as well as in programming on KFMB, KNBC, KCBS, CNN and KABC.
